ASSAULT ON THE PAY TRAIN [ASSALTO AO TREM PAGADOR]
A fact-based retelling of one of Brazil's most notorious heists, ASSAULT ON THE PAY TRAIN reveals in the underbelly of Rio de Janeiro the dearth of basic rights for people living in the favelas. A gang of small-time thieves from the slums, led by Tião Medonho (Eliezer Gomes), carries out the clockwork robbery of a train loaded with money belonging to the Bank of Brazil. The thieves have promised to spend only a fraction of the take — a commitment that quickly starts falling apart. This socially conscious thriller, rich in characterization, was expertly directed by Brazilian filmmaker Roberto Farias. (Note adapted from American Cinematheque.) DIR/SCR/PROD Roberto Farias; PROD Herbert Richers. Brazil, 1962, b&w, 103 min. In Portuguese with English subtitles. NOT RATED

ARMORED CAR ROBBERY in 35mm
When his veteran partner is shot dead during a daring daylight robbery, an LAPD police lieutenant, played by Charles McGraw at his toughest and most taciturn, vows revenge. ARMORED CAR ROBBERY is a classic "B" movie thanks to its ultra-hard-boiled lingo, director Richard Fleischer's briskly paced knockabout tour of 1950 Los Angeles and a cast of familiar supporting mugs (led by the reptilian William Talman), for once given center stage. The stellar ensemble relishes every minute of it, and so do we. (Note adapted from Noir City.) DIR Richard Fleischer; SCR Gerald Drayson Adams, Earl Felton; PROD Herman Schlom. U.S., 1950, b&w, 67 min. NOT RATED
