WALK A CROOKED MILE (1948)

WALK A CROOKED MILE (1948)

Special Features: 75th Anniversary. Intro by Film Noir Foundation founder Eddie Muller, host of TCM's Noir Alley, on Oct. 15

Attention OPPENHEIMER fans! Here's the first film to deal with the secrets and betrayals at the heart of Christopher Nolan's Atomic Age masterpiece. When a security leak at a bomb development facility ("Lakeview Laboratory" substitutes for Los Alamos) threatens the security of the free world, an FBI agent (Dennis O'Keefe) and a Scotland Yard inspector (Louis Hayward) track the spy ring throughout Commie-infested California. Hint to the feds: look for the big, shifty guy (Raymond Burr) with the Lenin goatee. This time capsule of escalating Cold War paranoia is rendered in a blend of "semi-documentary" and "high noir" styles — a good film made more interesting in the wake of OPPENHEIMER. (Note courtesy of the Film Noir Foundation.) DIR Gordon Douglas; SCR George Bruce, from a story by Bertram Millhauser; PROD Edward Small, Grant Whytock. U.S., 1948, b&w, 91 min. NOT RATED
