A DAUGHTER'S TRIBUTE TO HER FATHER: SOULEYMANE CISSÉ
[HOMMAGE D'UNE FILLE À SON PÈRE]
Filmmaker Fatou Cissé explores the life of her father — the trailblazing Malian filmmaker Souleymane Cissé (BAARA, THE WIND, YEELEN, THE YOUNG GIRL) — through the words of the director's friends, family and collaborators, including Senegalese journalist Baba Diop and directors Costa-Gavras, Martin Scorsese and Spike Lee. Tracing the trajectory that led Cissé to become one of the most influential figures in African cinema, his daughter looks at his early life in Dakar, his entry into filmmaking following Mali's independence in 1960 and the work that put him on the world stage — and often in conflict with the authorities — including his searing 1975 debut feature THE YOUNG GIRL, the first narrative feature in Mali's native Bambara language, and YEELEN, which won the Cannes Jury Prize in 1987, becoming the first African film to win an award in the festival's history. Official Selection, 2022 Cannes Film Festival. DIR/PROD Fatou Cissé; SCR Youssouf Baba Cissé, Malick Sangaré. Mali, 2022, color, 73 min. In French and Bambara with English subtitles. NOT RATED
