DESPERATE (1947)
Special Features: 75th Anniversary
One of three 1947 noirs directed by Anthony Mann featured in this year's program (alongside RAILROADED! and T-MEN), DESPERATE is a classic tale of unintentional criminality and an innocent couple on the lam. Seeking an honest living to support his new wife (Audrey Long), a returning veteran (Steve Brodie) accepts what he thinks is a straightforward trucking job. When he discovers that he's in fact the driver in a botched fur-trafficking heist, the couple are forced to run from the cops and the criminals who planned the job, including the head gangster himself, played by Raymond Burr in his first film noir. DIR/SCR Anthony Mann; SCR Harry Essex, from a story by Mann and Dorothy Atlas; PROD Michael Kraike. U.S., 1947, b&w, 73 min. NOT RATED
