SAINT JACK
Ben Gazzara stars as Jack Flowers in Peter Bogdanovich's warmhearted character study of an American expat in Singapore, which was executive-produced by Hugh Hefner. For visa purposes he's a local fixer for visiting businessmen; in reality Flowers is a pimp with a heart of gold, dreaming of opening his own bordello. But when the local mob starts to apply some pressure, he'll have to decide how far his morals are willing to stretch. Bogdanovich co-wrote the screenplay based on Paul Theroux's novel and shot the film on location in Singapore, leading Wes Anderson to describe it as Bogdanovich's Bond movie (don't miss former Bond George Lazenby playing a crooked U.S. senator). DIR/SCR Peter Bogdanovich; SCR Howard Sackler, Paul Theroux, from his novel; PROD Roger Corman. U.S., 1979, color, 112 min. In English, Cantonese, Dutch, French and Italian with English subtitles.
