After the success of THE NAKED CITY, Universal headed to Brooklyn to explore another corner of crime in postwar New York City. Adapted from Irving Shulman’s hard-hitting novel, CITY ACROSS THE RIVER follows a ragtag gang of youths, The Dukes, who get wrapped up in a deadly crime. Director Maxwell Shane shot on location in Williamsburg and cast a series of unknowns (in the process giving Tony Curtis his first speaking role) to push the documentary framing conceit of the film. Focusing on poverty and despair as the roots of crime, upon release it was understood as a direct attack on Brooklyn and made municipal authorities think twice about allowing location filming.
