KISS OF DEATH (1947)
Special Features: Intro by film historian Foster Hirsch on Oct. 11
The pinnacle of Darryl F. Zanuck and 20th Century Fox’s brief infatuation with New York-set docudramas is this legendary film noir, directed by Henry Hathaway from a script by Ben Hecht and Charles Lederer. Arrested following a botched jewelry store heist, Nick Bianco (Victor Mature) plans to keep quiet about his accomplices and do his time. But after he and his family are viciously betrayed, Nick begins a dangerous cooperation with DA Louis D’Angelo (Brian Donlevy), agreeing to become a deep undercover informant in exchange for having his sentence commuted and getting visitation time with his young children. But as Nick’s criminal and legal entanglements become ever more dangerous, he is ultimately pitted against psychopathic killer Tommy Udo (Richard Widmark, Oscar®-nominated in his screen debut), whom he must help bring to justice in order to win his own freedom and a chance at a peaceful life with a new love (Coleen Gray).
