Jane Campion, Palme d'Or winner for THE PIANO in 1993, returns with her first feature film since 2009's BRIGHT STAR. A revisionist Western set in 1920s Montana, based on the 1967 novel by Thomas Savage, the story focuses on two rancher brothers: Phil Burbank (Benedict Cumberbatch), whip smart and casually cruel, a college-educated man who prefers the hard work of ranch life; and George Burbank (Jesse Plemons), mild-mannered, incurious and leisurely, but kind-hearted to a fault. Despite their different temperaments the brothers are devoted to each other and the family business. But after George impulsively marries widow Rose Gordon (Kirsten Dunst), who comes to live in their family home along with her awkward son Peter (Kodi Smit-McPhee), the delicate balance in the Burbank household is upset. With Phil actively making Rose uncomfortable in her new home, she soon turns to drink — but his initial harassment of the shy and scholarly Peter in time gives way to a strange fascination. Winner, Silver Lion for Best Direction, 2021 Venice Film Festival. DIR/SCR/PROD Jane Campion, from the novel by Thomas Savage; PROD Iain Canning, Roger Frappier, Tanya Seghatchian, Emile Sherman.
