Once again adapting a novel by Vicente Blasco Ibáñez, following the great success of his 1921 screen adaptation of "The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse," director Rex Ingram filmed this ambitious WWI epic on location including scenes in Barcelona, Naples and Marseilles. Spanish sea captain Ulysses Ferragut (Antonio Moreno) meets the mysterious German woman Freya Talberg (Alice Terry) amid the ruins of Pompeii, and soon falls in love with her. But this is during the Great War, and she is a spy for Germany seeking out the captain's Mediterranean seafaring knowledge to help her country's U-boat campaign.
