HE WALKED BY NIGHT in 35mm
Special Features: 75th Anniversary. Intro by film historian Foster Hirsch on Oct. 22
In this landmark noir — co-directed by an uncredited Anthony Mann — a psychotic loner (Richard Basehart) uses his genius for electronics to commit robberies while evading the police. When he graduates to murder, L.A.'s finest, including Sgt. Marty Brennan (Scott Brady) and methodical Lee Whitey (Jack Webb, who was immediately inspired to create DRAGNET), pull out a few modern manhunting techniques of their own. The desperate hunt tracks the killer through — and beneath — cityscapes stunningly photographed by the great John Alton. (Note courtesy of the Film Noir Foundation.) DIR Alfred L. Werker, Anthony Mann; SCR John C. Higgins, Crane Wilbur; PROD Bryan Foy, Robert Kane. U.S., 1948, b&w, 79 min. NOT RATED
