MEGALOPOLIS
For over 40 years, Francis Ford Coppola dreamed of making a film inspired by Roman statesman Catiline’s conspiracy to overthrow a pair of consuls and seize control of the Roman Republic in 63 BC. Though Coppola amassed hundreds of pages of notes and even shot footage over the decades, the film ultimately languished in development hell until the massive success of Coppola’s winemaking business allowed him the means to produce the film as he envisioned. Cesar Catilina (Adam Driver) is a genius artist eager to bring the City of New Rome into an idealistic utopian future but is opposed by Franklyn Cicero (Giancarlo Esposito), the city mayor committed to a regressive status quo that perpetuates greed, special interests and partisan warfare. Torn between them is socialite Julia Cicero (Nathalie Emmanuel), Cicero’s daughter, whose love for Cesar has divided her loyalties, forcing her to discover what she truly believes humanity deserves. MEGALOPOLIS is an introspective, mesmerizing, bombastic and utterly insane work from a filmmaker who has dedicated himself to making art on his own unapologetic terms. (Note adapted from Lionsgate.)
