WITHOUT PITY [SENZA PIETÀ]
A combination of neorealism and noir that never could have been made in the United States, WITHOUT PITY stars African American GI John Kitzmiller as a U.S. soldier in Italy awaiting demobilization whose kindness toward a local working girl (Carla Del Poggio) leads to an unexpected romance. Though the film was lauded at international festivals, its interracial romance prevented wide distribution in the U.S. This is a rare chance to see the neglected landmark featuring a script co-written by Federico Fellini and the first screen credit of the great Giulietta Masina (LA STRADA, NIGHTS OF CABIRIA). (Note adapted from Noir City.) DIR/SCR Alberto Lattuada; SCR Federico Fellini, Tullio Pinelli; PROD Carlo Ponti. Italy, 1948, b&w, 90 min. In Italian with English subtitles. NOT RATED

THE SMALL BACK ROOM aka HOUR OF GLORY
In this classically romantic suspense thriller, David Farrar stars as bomb disposal expert Sammy Rice, embittered by a prosthetic leg courtesy of an on-the-job snafu and battling addiction (giving directors Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger the opportunity for a German Expressionism–inspired delirium fantasy sequence), until faced with the ultimate explosive challenge: a German bomb sporting an unbeatable booby trap. (Note courtesy of Rialto Pictures.) DIR/SCR/PROD Michael Powell, Emeric Pressburger. UK, 1949, b&w, 107 min. NOT RATED
