BARBIE
"Hi, Barbie!" Leave it to acclaimed filmmaker Greta Gerwig (LADY BIRD, LITTLE WOMEN) to reshape the iconic Barbie doll into the protagonist of a subversive feminist comedy that became the highest-grossing film of 2023. Co-written with her husband Noah Baumbach, Gerwig's BARBIE finds the titular blondie — a pitch-perfect Margot Robbie, who produced the film (and is also responsible for the dueling release dates that gave rise to Barbenheimer) — living in blissful harmony in Barbie Land with her fellow Barbies (Issa Rae, Kate McKinnon and Hari Nef, to name a few) and Kens (Ryan Gosling, Simu Liu and Kingsley Ben-Adir, among others). When she's stricken with an unexpected fear of death, cellulite and flat feet, Barbie journeys into the real world to find the only person who can put her back together: the child playing with her. Cue an infectious, madcap adventure filled with ambitious ideas, wonderfully realized production design and surprisingly catchy tunes that celebrate women everywhere — and finally give Ken his rightful place in doll history. DIR/SCR Greta Gerwig, based on "Barbie" by Mattel; SCR Noah Baumbach; PROD Tom Ackerley, Robbie Brenner, David Heyman, Margot Robbie. U.S./UK, 2023, color, 114 min. RATED PG-13
