After 13 months of trying to convince soul singer-turned-gospel preacher Al Green to be the subject of a feature-length portrait for Britain's Channel 4 Television, Robert Mugge finally won over Rev. Green just days before he needed to transport a large film crew to Memphis to shoot and record a three-hour, seventh-anniversary service at Green's Full Gospel Tabernacle Church. The intercutting of scenes from that service; from a concert at Washington, DC's Bolling Air Force Base; from a rehearsal in Green's recording studio; and from perhaps the most intimate one-on-one interview ever recorded create the extraordinary GOSPEL ACCORDING TO AL GREEN. As David Chute exclaimed in the Los Angeles Herald Examiner, "Green's 'performance' as a pastor reaches literally ecstatic heights; it's a pentecostal seizure set to thumping funk music. You'll probably never see a more powerful vocal spectacle; it's James Brown times 10. This is an amazing movie, packed with astonishing music. It's also a riveting exploration of the psychology of pop ambition." DIR/PROD Robert Mugge. UK, 1984, color, 94 min. NOT RATED
