Dbl Feature: LITTLE CAESAR with THE PUBLIC ENEMY
LITTLE CAESAR
"Mother of mercy, is this the end of Rico?" A cornerstone of the gangster movie genre, this pre-Code rise-and-fall tale of an Al Capone-like crime boss remains a riveting viewing experience even far removed from its Roaring Twenties setting. Edward G. Robinson is incendiary as Cesare Enrico "Rico" Bandello, a small-time crook with big-time aspirations and no compunction about murdering his way to the top. Joe Massara (Douglas Fairbanks Jr.) is his best pal, who longs to go straight and pursue his original dream to become a dancer; Olga (Glenda Farrell) is the hoofer who comes between them. DIR Mervyn LeRoy; SCR Francis Edward Faragoh, Robert N. Lee, from the novel by W. R. Burnett; PROD Hal B. Wallis, Darryl F. Zanuck. U.S., 1931, b&w, 79 min. NOT RATED

THE PUBLIC ENEMY
William Wellman's classic pre-Code gangster tale, chronicling the rise and fall of its anti-hero from small-timer to kingpin to casualty, became the prototype for the entire genre. James Cagney plays the tenement-dwelling hood Tom Powers, clever and ruthless, who rises through the ranks to become a big-shot bootlegger during Prohibition. Kitty (Mae Clarke) is the girlfriend who bears the brunt of Tom's violent and mercurial temperament, including the controversial grapefruit-to-the-face incident; Gwen Allen (Jean Harlow) is the Texas temptress he throws her over for. DIR William A. Wellman; SCR Harvey F. Thew, from a story by Kubec Glasmon and John Bright; PROD Darryl F. Zanuck. U.S., 1931, b&w, 83 min. NOT RATED
