SUZHOU RIVER

Special Features: New 4K Restoration

[SŪZHŌU HÉ] [苏州河]
Along the banks of the Suzhou River, which winds precariously through Shanghai, Marda (Jia Hongsheng) falls in love with a beautiful young woman named Moudan (Zhou Xun). When he tries to kidnap her in order to demand ransom money from her rich father, she escapes from him, jumping into the river and disappearing forever. Marda serves a three-year jail sentence for his attempted crime. Upon his release, he meets a woman who looks exactly like Moudan, named Meimei (also played by Zhou). An exciting, action-filled suspense thriller that draws direct inspiration from thematic and stylistic elements of Alfred Hitchcock's VERTIGO, director Lou Ye's (SATURDAY FICTION) SUZHOU RIVER is now considered a classic of modern Chinese cinema.
