TERESA (1951)
A spiritual sequel to Fred Zinnemann's wartime drama THE SEARCH (which made Montgomery Clift a star), TERESA explores the postwar life of insecure G.I. Philip (John Ericson) and his Italian bride Teresa (Pier Angeli, in her first American film). Upon returning to New York, the couple struggles to adjust to their new life. Philip is unemployed and working through his post-traumatic stress with his Veterans Affairs officer Frank (Rod Steiger, in his screen debut). To make matters worse, they're living in Philip's childhood home with his domineering mother (Patricia Collinge, Oscar®-nominated for THE LITTLE FOXES). Angeli gives an alluring and heartfelt performance as a dedicated wife in Zinnemann's neorealist-indebted drama, which was filmed on location in war-ravaged Italy and New York City. DIR Fred Zinnemann; SCR Stewart Stern, from a story by Stern and Alfred Hayes; PROD Arthur M. Loew Jr. U.S., 1951, b&w, 102 min. In English and Italian with English subtitles. NOT RATED
