THE WAR OF THE WORLDS (1953)
Special Features: 4K Restoration
H. G. Wells' classic tale of interplanetary invasion has shocked and awed audiences from the source novel's 1898 publication to Orson Welles' infamous 1938 radio play to this classic 1953 screen adaptation featuring Oscar®-winning special effects. The film transposes the novel's original setting from Victorian-era England to 1950s southern California, and swaps the novel's subtext of waning-era British Empire anxieties for fresh fears about the Atomic Age and the Cold War. Martian spacecraft equipped with vastly superior weaponry invade Earth; nuclear scientist Clayton Forrester (Gene Barry) and librarian Sylvia Van Buren (Ann Robinson) lend their talents to the resistance efforts, but ultimately luck will play as big a role as any science or technology in this battle.
