QUO VADIS, AIDA?
Jasmila Žbanić's acclaimed film expertly conveys the horrors of the Bosnian war and the 1995 Srebrenica massacre, where some 8,000 Muslim men and boys were rounded up and murdered by the war criminal General Ratko Mladic. Aida, played by Jasna Đuričić, works as a UN translator where she witnesses the horror on all sides: the tyrannized townspeople, including her husband and sons; the murderous aggressors of the Bosnian Serb army and their pernicious propaganda; and the UN peacekeepers, led by Dutch officers, who are outmatched, outwitted and unduly constrained by their too-narrowly defined orders. In the film's chilling epilogue, years later after peace has been declared, Serb families now live in the homes of the dead and disappeared, while the painstaking identification of human remains takes place at the community center. Žbanić's powerful film bears witness to events that must never be forgotten.
