WESTERNER, THE (1940) in 35mm
Special Features: Introduction by Catherine Wyler
Walter Brennan won his third Best Supporting Actor Oscar® for his performance as the notorious "hanging judge" Roy Bean in this iconic Western, starring Gary Cooper and directed by William Wyler. Bean's self-appointed judge — "the only law west of the Pecos," alongside a crony of cattle rancher interests, runs a kangaroo court out of his saloon in Vinegaroon, Texas, arbitrarily issuing fines and harsh sentences to the put-upon locals, especially new homesteaders. After Cole Harden (Cooper) is framed for horse theft, he must use his wits to play for time, cleverly exploiting Bean's obsessive fandom for actress Lillie Langtry (Lilian Bond) first to create a diversion, then to set a trap for his adversary. DIR William Wyler; SCR Jo Swerling, Niven Busch, from the story by Stuart N. Lake; PROD Samuel Goldwyn. U.S., 1940, b&w, 100 min. NOT RATED
