DEEP RED
Special Features: New 4K DCP
[PROFONDO ROSSO]
Anticipating the eerie magic of SUSPIRIA, DEEP RED finds Dario Argento and creative partner Daria Nicolodi presenting a simple, Christmas-set slasher. At least, that's what it appears to be. But within two minutes, it's obvious that there's nothing "simple" about DEEP RED at all. When a psychic performer picks up the thoughts of a killer in the audience and soon becomes a victim, a musician (David Hemmings) is pulled into a complex web of mystery as he investigates the murder. With this movie, Argento perfected the classy, ultra-violent horror sub-genre that would come to be known as giallo — and also perfected playing audiences like a fiddle. This includes Goblin's soundtrack, which is a spook-a-delic prog-rock masterpiece that beautifully complements the movie's dreamy mood. (Note courtesy of American Genre Film Archive.) DIR/SCR Dario Argento; SCR Bernadino Zapponi; PROD Claudio Argentio, Salvatore Argento. Italy, 1975, color, 127 min. In English, Italian and German with English subtitles. NOT RATED
