THE CARDBOARD LOVER (1928) in 35mm

American autograph hound Sally Baxter's (Marion Davies) attempts to get the signature of French tennis champ Andre Briault (Nils Asther) at a Monte Carlo hotel-casino end up getting her into big trouble at the baccarat table. Saddled with an enormous debt, a solution is found: Sally will help Andre get back at his two-timing ex-fiancée Simone (Jetta Goudal) by posing as his new girlfriend and prevent him from any backsliding in his feelings for his ex. Comedic hilarity ensues in this proto-screwball comedy, with Davies working her repertoire of disguises, impressions and physical comedy in high style. DIR Robert Z. Leonard; SCR F.
