EVIL DEAD, THE
Sam Raimi's original vision for this slasher horror film was an indie experiment that would inspire a genre; he used the low budget to his advantage and injected humor into the Satan-laden narrative. Five college students, including Ash Williams (Bruce Campbell), travel to a cabin in the Tennessee woods where they encounter evil spirits emanating from an audio tape and embodying the environment around them, resulting in increasingly gruesome and gory deaths. The film was a mild box-office success, but was lauded by critics, and even screened at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival in 1982. It would go on to spawn a franchise, including sequels, video games, a TV show and a big-budget remake. This recent restoration was scanned in 4K from the original camera negative.
