TORMENT (1944)

TORMENT (1944)

[HETS]
Ingmar Bergman's first produced screenplay was for the great Swedish filmmaker Alf Sjöberg's TORMENT, a dark coming-of-age drama about a boarding school senior, Widgren (Alf Kjellin), terrorized by his sadistic Latin teacher. When Widgren falls for a troubled local girl, Bertha (Mai Zetterling), he finds himself caught up even further in a web of emotional mind games. A worldwide success, the film catapulted the then-19-year-old Zetterling to international acclaim and gave her the role she often considered her greatest. (Note adapted from Janus Films.) DIR Alf Sjöberg; SCR Ingmar Bergman; PROD Harald Molander, Victor Sjöström. Sweden, 1944, b&w, 101 min. In Swedish with English subtitles. NOT RATED
