YOU BURN ME

YOU BURN ME

[TÚ ME ABRASAS]
For his latest effervescent, earthly delight, acclaimed Argentine filmmaker Matías Piñeiro swaps his trademark Shakespeare adaptations for the ancient Greek poet Sappho. Inspired by a chapter from Cesare Pavese's "Dialogues with Leucò," YOU BURN ME finds Sappho in an imagined conversation with the nymph Britomartis. Bonded by their untimely demises (Sappho leapt into the ocean in the throes of heartache, while Britomartis toppled into the sea, dodging the advances of a man), the women contemplate death, love and desire. Shooting in warm 16mm, Piñeiro takes an ambitious experimental approach to his adaptation as it unfolds, finding profound meaning in fragments, translations, repetition and process. With a troupe of his recurring actresses (María Villar, Gabi Saidón and Agustina Muñoz) by his side, the director pushes his signature style to new heights. Official Selection, 2024 Berlin and New York film festivals. DIR/SCR Matías Piñeiro; PROD Garbiñe Ortega, Melanie Schapiro. Argentina/Spain, 2024, color, 64 min. In Spanish with English subtitles.
