[LA PLACE D'UNE AUTRE]
Themes of class anxiety, moral panic and mistaken identity from Wilkie Collins' 1873 source novel are transposed to a World War I setting by filmmaker Aurélia Georges, adding new resonance from the era's struggle for women's rights to the story of Nélie Laborde's (Lyna Khoudri, THE FRENCH DISPATCH, PAPICHA) journey from prostitute to frontline Red Cross nurse to beloved ward of a society woman. Nélie's intellect, fortitude and daring are very real, but her new identity is based on a lie: nurse Nélie has decided to escape her miserable existence by passing herself off as Rose Juillet (Maud Wyler), an impoverished Swiss gentlewoman killed crossing the war zone before she could be deposited in the home of her late father's wealthy friend. Now installed as the reader and trusted confidante of Madame Eléonore de Lengwil (Sabine Azéma), Nélie as "Rose" enjoys great comfort and care — until the ghosts of her past return. DIR/SCR Aurélia Georges; SCR Maud Ameline, from the novel "The New Magdelen" by Wilkie Collins; PROD Emmanuel Barraux, Olivier Père. France, 2021, color, 112 min. In French with English subtitles.
