EVOLUTION (2021)
Special Features: North American Premiere
Hungarian filmmaking duo Kornél Mundruczó and Kata Wéber's (PIECES OF A WOMAN, WHITE GOD) EVOLUTION is a time-hopping triptych where each act unfolds in a single take. Based on an earlier theater piece by the filmmakers and shot entirely during the pandemic, it traces three generations of a family, from a surreal memory of Auschwitz to the fractious argument between a mother and daughter about their Jewish identity, to the grandson in modern-day Berlin who hides his heritage amid the casual antisemitism of his peers and elders. Equal parts surreal and heartfelt, EVOLUTION is a cross between SON OF SAUL and THE FATHER, filled with striking images by Mundruczó and a wrenchingly poignant and personal script from Wéber. Official Selection, 2021 Cannes Film Festival. DIR Kornél Mundruczó; SCR Kata Wéber; PROD Viola Fügen, Viktória Petrányi, Michael Weber. Hungary/Germany, 2021, color, 97 min. In Hungarian and German with English subtitles. NOT RATED
