MARGRETE: QUEEN OF THE NORTH
[MARGRETE DEN FØRSTE]
Move over Jon Snow, "King of the North," this is the first biopic about Denmark's Queen Margrete I, "Queen of the North," a trailblazing monarch who united Denmark, Norway and Sweden into the long-lived Scandinavian alliance known as the Kalmar Union. It's 1402 and Margrete (a fabulously regal Trine Dyrholm, THE COMMUNE, IN A BETTER WORLD) is busy ruling through her adopted son Erik (Morten Hee Andersen, RIDE UPON THE STORM), whom she intends to betroth to an English princess to strengthen her European alliances and further secure the status of her Nordic union. But when a mysterious young man comes forward claiming to be her biological son, Margrete starts to sense a conspiracy afoot, finding herself in an impossible dilemma that could shatter her life's work and the fate of the union she has so carefully orchestrated. Directed by Charlotte Sieling (THE BRIDGE, HOMELAND, THE KILLING, THOSE WHO KILL), MARGRETE is a GAME OF THRONES-level tale of royal intrigue, power games and betrayal, with an all-star pan-Scandinavian ensemble cast featuring Søren Malling (THE INVESTIGATION), Jakob Oftebro (KON-TIKI), Bjørn Floberg (OUT STEALING HORSES), Magnus Krepper (QUEEN OF HEARTS) and Thomas W. Gabrielsson (A ROYAL AFFAIR). Official Selection, 2021 Norwegian International Film Festival and Reykjavik International Film Festival. DIR/SCR Charlotte Sieling; SCR Jesper Fink, Maya Ilsøe; PROD Lars Bredo Rahbek, Birgitte Skov. Denmark/Norway/Sweden/Poland/Czech Republic/Iceland, 2021, color, 120 min. In English, Danish, German, Swedish, Norwegian and French with English subtitles. NOT RATED
