REALM, THE (2018)
Winner of 7 Goya Awards, including Best Director and Best Lead Actor, this fast-paced thriller from Rodrigo Sorogoyen (MAY GOD SAVE US) depicts Spain's current political climate through the shamelessness of a politician who will stop at nothing to avoid taking responsibility for his actions. Antonio de la Torre (THE FURY OF A PATIENT MAN, MAY GOD SAVE US) plays Manuel, a crooked bureaucrat who enjoys the lifestyle that kickbacks afford. He eats at fancy restaurants, parties with his friends on yachts and provides a very luxurious life for his family. Manuel brazenly bribes and extorts anyone who threatens to expose the activities of his inner circle. When he is singled out to take the fall for a case of fraudulent government contracts, rather than admit to any wrongdoing, Manuel decides to sell out his whole party in an effort to avoid jail time. It's a decision that puts many lives at risk. (Note adapted from the Toronto International Film Festival.) Winner, Best Director, Best Lead Actor (Antonio de la Torre), Best Supporting Actor (Luis Zahera), Best Original Screenplay, Best Original Score, Best Editing and Best Sound, 2019 Goya Awards; Official Selection, 2018 Toronto, San Sebastián and London film festivals.
