Silent with live musical accompaniment by Makia Matsumura

New 4K DCP restoration

Discovering that her lover has been untrue, Italian countess Elnora (Pola Negri) announces, "I am a woman of the world, not the world's woman," and that she shall undertake a journey "to the other side of the world" — Maple Valley, Iowa. Visiting her country cousin Sam Poore (Chester Conklin), the countess causes quite a stir among the townsfolk for her smoking, makeup and fancy clothes. And that's before the locals find out about her tattoo. Filmmaker Malcolm St. Clair — a veteran actor, writer and director of comedy shorts for Keystone, Sennett and most famously, Buster Keaton — lends a Lubitsch-like touch to the proceedings, and guides Negri to a bravura comedic performance as a grand dame in the hinterlands. DIR Malcolm St. Clair; SCR Pierre Collings, from the novel "A Tattooed Countess" by Carl Van Vechten; PROD Jesse L. Lasky, Adolph Zukor. U.S., 1925, b&w, 70 min. NOT RATED
