Film Comment's top film of 2017 is a gritty, audacious crime thriller with an antihero to die for. Celebrated filmmakers Benny and Josh Safdie (DADDY LONGLEGS, HEAVEN KNOWS WHAT) return to the mean streets of New York City to follow one mind-bending night in the life of not-so-petty criminal Constantine "Connie" Nikas (Robert Pattinson), after a botched bank robbery lands his younger brother Nick (Benny Safdie) in prison. Desperate and shameless, Connie embarks on a twisted odyssey through the city's nocturnal underworld in a frantic bid to spring Nick from jail — and maybe make a few dollars along the way. As he races against the clock, Connie spirals into violence and mayhem, but his spirit seems uncrushable, and as his task becomes more Herculean with every wrong move, you can't help but root for him to make it. Official selection, 2017 Cannes and Locarno film festivals; nominated for five Independent Spirit Awards. DIR/SCR Josh Safdie; DIR Benny Safdie; SCR Ronald Bronstein; PROD Sebastian Bear-McClard, Oscar Boyson, Terry Dougas, Paris Kasidokostas Latsis. U.S., 2017, color, 101 min. RATED R
