CAT PEOPLE (1942)
Ambiguities abound as fashion designer Simone Simon fears the old Balkan family curse will catch up with her, and she'll metamorphose into a panther if her passions are aroused — or is it just all in her mind? Memorably stylish horror sequences include a stalking-by-shadow at an indoor swimming pool, with shimmering visuals lensed by ace cinematographer Nicholas Musuraca and effective shock editing — the screeching arrival of a New York bus making for one of the film's jumpiest frights. DIR Jacques Tourneur; SCR DeWitt Bodeen; PROD Val Lewton. U.S., 1942, b&w, 73 min. NOT RATED
