THE EXTRAORDINARY ADVENTURES OF MR. WEST IN THE LAND OF THE BOLSHEVIKS
[НЕОБЫЧАЙНЫЕ ПРИКЛЮЧЕНИЯ МИСТЕРА ВЕСТА В СТРАНЕ БОЛЬШЕВИКОВ NEOBYCHAINYE PRIKLYUCHENIYA MISTERA VESTA V STRANE BOLSHEVIKOV]
Mr. John West, of the YMCA, comes to Soviet Moscow on a mission, accompanied by his loyal sidekick, cowboy Jeddie. Right off the train, the clueless duo are warmly welcomed by a local gang of petty thieves, and hilarity ensues. Jokes targeting American ignorance about the young Bolshevik state comingle with the unintentional humor of the filmmaker's own stereotypical ideas of Americans. But the stunt- and chase-packed action-comedy by the father of Soviet montage is a conscious homage to American slapstick. Distracted, enthusiastic and donning round glasses, Mr. West is clearly a Russian Harold Lloyd. DIR Lev Kuleshov; SCR Nikolai Aseev, Vsevolod Pudovkin. USSR, 1924, b&w, 94 min. Russian intertitles with English subtitles. NOT RATED
