JANE EYRE (1943)
Screening in 35mm
Joan Fontaine's Jane Eyre escapes the deprivations of a hellish orphanage for employment in the household of Orson Welles' brooding Edward Rochester. The shadowy cinematography is by George Barnes, an Oscar® winner for Alfred Hitchcock's REBECCA; the pulsing score is by Bernard Herrmann. Said Fontaine of her costar: "He strode on the set and proclaimed, 'All right, everyone turn to page eight,' and we did it, though he wasn't the director." DIR/SCR Robert Stevenson; SCR John Houseman, Aldous Huxley, from the novel by Charlotte Brontë; PROD William Goetz, Kenneth Macgowan, Orson Welles. U.S., 1944, b&w, 97 min. NOT RATED
