WISE BLOOD

Intro and Q&A with writer and producer Michael Fitzgerald

Screening in 35mm

Deranged young war vet Hazel Motes (Brad Dourif, ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST) might be the only member of the Church Without Christ — which he founded — but he will go to great lengths to preach his teaching to the public. Dourif's superbly oddball performance is the heart of the film, but the grotesque world of his dusty Georgian town is populated by a gallery of equally eccentric characters, played by a supporting cast that includes Harry Dean Stanton and Ned Beatty. John Huston, a master of literary adaptation, emphasized the darkly comic aspect of the Southern Gothic classic by Flannery O'Connor in this poignant exploration of American spirituality. DIR John Huston; SCR Benedict Fitzgerald; SCR/PROD Michael Fitzgerald, from the novel by Flannery O'Connor; PROD Kathy Fitzgerald. U.S., 1979, color, 106 min. RATED PG
