TOUCHEZ PAS AU GRISBI

Intro by Film Noir Foundation founder Eddie Muller on Oct. 22; intro by Montgomery College film professor on Oct. 25

Screening in 35mm.

Veteran crook Jean Gabin has been sitting tight on a stash of eight gold bars he and young protégé René Dary stole several weeks earlier. But rival gangsters have begun to nose around, including Lino Ventura, who has been making time with Riton's girl Jeanne Moreau. Jacques Becker's signature crime thriller boasts wise-cracking dialogue and explosive action, and Gabin's masterful performance (Best Actor, 1954 Venice Film Festival) renders a portrait of aging masculinity and a nuanced portrayal of honor among thieves. DIR/SCR Jacques Becker; SCR Maurice Griffe, Albert Simonin, from his novel; PROD Robert Dorfmann. France, 1954, b&w, 94 min. In French with English subtitles. NOT RATED
