Marcelo Gomes' (ONCE UPON A TIME VERONICA) unconventional biopic of Brazilian national hero Joaquim José da Silva Xavier (Júlio Machado), who led an 18th-century uprising against Portuguese rule, highlights the historic foundations of economic and social inequality that continue to reverberate through modern Brazil. As the colony of Portugal endures a decline in gold production, a minority rules over a corrupt and autocratic society. Joaquim is a soldier famous for capturing gold smugglers. Waiting for a promotion, he undertakes a risky mission in order to buy the freedom of the enslaved Blackie (Isabél Zuaa), with whom he is in love. Official Selection, 2017 Berlin and Hong Kong film festivals.
