FARAWAY LAND, A

U.S. Premiere

[UN SUELO LEJANO]
Part road movie and part historical documentary, Gabriel Muro's fascinating debut follows Guaraní language and philosophy professor José Manuel Silvero Arévalos on a lecture tour through Paraguay. His journey takes him to Nueva Germania, a rural community founded in the late nineteenth century by Friedrich Nietzsche's sister. Conceived as an Aryan colony from which to forge a claim to the entire South American continent, the project failed in less than two years, but the remote settlement survived by cultivating the yerba mate tree. Arévalos reveals the rascist utopia's history and how it has been mixed with and subsumed by the culture of Paraguay. Official Selection, 2016 Havana Film Festival and 2017 Buenos Aires International Festival of Independent Cinema.DIR/SCR Gabriel Muro; PROD Hernán Figueroa, Nicolás Cobasky. Argentina/Paraguay, 2016, color, 93 min. In Spanish, Guaraní and German with English subtitles. NOT RATED
