CONFESSIONAL, THE (1995)
In actor Robert Lepage's (JESUS OF MONTREAL) directorial debut, two stories separated by three decades play out in Québec city. In 1989, following his father's death, Pierre Lamontagne (Lothaire Bluteau, BLACK ROBE, JESUS OF MONTREAL) embarks on a quest to unravel the identity of his adopted brother's biological father. The search leads him back to 1952, just as Alfred Hitchcock arrives in Québec City to film I CONFESS, and a pregnant, unmarried young woman makes her own decisive and fateful confession. Part Hitchcockian homage, part neo-noir, THE CONFESSIONAL weaves together past and present to reveal a complex, decades-long family secret. DIR/SCR Robert Lepage; PROD Philippe Carcassonne, David Puttnam, Denise Robert. Canada/UK/France, 1995, color/b&w, 100 min. In English and French with English subtitles. NOT RATED
