Visionary super-auteur Guy Maddin's "docu-fantasia" melds fact, memory, myth and metafiction to paint a loving portrait of his hometown and the reasons the film's narrator, a character named Guy Maddin, is trying desperately to leave it. Following COWARDS BEND THE KNEE and BRAND UPON THE BRAIN!, the film completes Maddin's autobiographical "Me Trilogy," defying genre and stylistic classification, to create a cold-as-ice, somniferous city of dreams, hockey and disappointment. Weaving together recycled footage and melodramatic recreations (starring B-movie cult icon Ann Savage in her final role), Maddin binds personal autobiography with the landmarks and historical events he sees as key to Winnipeg's identity. DIR/SCR/PROD Guy Maddin; SCR George Toles; PROD Phyllis Laing, Jody Shapiro. Canada, 2007, color/b&w, 80 min. NOT RATED
