AUGUST 32ND ON EARTH

Introduction by Marie-José Raymond and Claude Fournier, co-directors of Éléphant: The Memory of Québec Cinema, a large scale, non-profit project to restore, digitize and make available Québec's cinematic heritage

[UN 32 AOÛT SUR TERRE]
Denis Villeneuve (ARRIVAL, BLADE RUNNER 2049, INCENDIES) made a splash at the 1998 Cannes Film Festival with this debut feature, a sweet and soulful road movie about Simone (Pascale Bussières, WHEN NIGHT IS FALLING), a young woman sent into existential free-fall after surviving a car crash. Feeling her mortality, she quits her job, cancels a trip and decides to have a baby. Her ideal candidate for father is her best friend Phillipe (Alexis Martin), who feigns agreement on the near-impossible condition that they conceive in a desert. Undeterred, Simone locates the nearest desert and the pair leaves for Utah, where an unexpected journey of self-discovery awaits. DIR/SCR Denis Villeneuve; PROD Roger Frappier. Canada, 1998, color, 88 min. In French with English subtitles. NOT RATED
