MOULIN ROUGE! (2001)
Baz Luhrmann is at his best with this heartfelt but irreverent, design-heavy but nimbly kinetic homage to all things romantic and musical. In a postmodern mash-up of Belle Époque Parisian-set movies (John Huston's MOULIN ROUGE, Jean Renoir's FRENCH CANCAN), Puccini's "La Bohème" and a mad mix tape of classic movie musicals and modern pop songs, English poet Christian (Ewan McGregor) and French courtesan Satine (Nicole Kidman) find love in the den of vice that is Montmartre's Moulin Rouge. The soundtrack is a freewheeling and frenetic pastiche of tunes from the likes of T. Rex, David Bowie, Madonna, David Bowie, Nirvana, Elton John, Queen, The Police, Fatboy Slim and Labelle, reinterpreted by the game cast, including Jim Broadbent, John Leguizamo, Richard Roxburgh and Kylie Minogue. "It's a head-on collision of the romantic and the grotesque, the songs of MGM and MTV." – Richard Corliss, TIME. DIR/SCR/PROD Baz Luhrmann; SCR Craig Pearce; PROD Fred Baron, Martin Brown. Australia/U.S., 2001, color/b&w, 127 min. RATED PG-13
