Chavela Vargas is a legend. By the time she was a teenager, she was making a living singing on the streets of Mexico City. Before long, she was collaborating with idols like José Alfredo Jimenez and selling out stadiums. This inspiring biographical portrait tells her story as a musician, and also explores her humanity through her intimate relationships and struggle with alcoholism. CHAVELA utilizes a mix of archival footage and interviews to illuminate her lasting legacy as an artist and a reluctant LGBT icon. Best Documentary, 2017 Frameline International LGBTQ Film Festival; Official Selection, 2017 Berlin, Guadalajara, Hot Docs, Seattle and AFI DOCS film festivals.
