DAWN (2016)

[AUSMA]
2016 Oscar® Selection, Latvia
Taking its cue from an unfinished project by Sergei Eisenstein and based on a Soviet legend about a 13-year-old martyr murdered for denouncing her counter-revolutionary father to the authorities, DAWN shifts the action to a collective farm in Latvia, where a young hero named Janis reports his brutish father's anti-Soviet leanings to the farm's leadership. With echoes of Michael Haneke and Béla Tarr, Laila Pakalniņa (THE HOSTAGE, THE SHOE) creates a surreal, absurdist fairytale that is both a love letter to classic Soviet cinema and a highly stylized, playful critique of its underlying myths. Official Selection, 2015 Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival; 2016 Gothenburg and Seattle film festivals. DIR/SCR/PROD Laila Pakalniņa; PROD Małgorzata Staroņ, Kaspar Kallas. Latvia/Estonia/Poland, 2015, b&w, 96 min, DCP. In Latvian with English subtitles. NOT RATED
