E. A. Dupont's Weimar masterpiece can now be seen in a stunning new restoration — its most complete version since it was originally released in 1925. Small-time carnival owner Boss Huller (Emil Jannings) leaves his wife and child to return to the trapeze, now partnered, professionally and romantically, with newcomer Bertha-Marie (Lya De Putti). Spotted by famed aerialist Artinelli (Warwick Ward), they form a trapeze trio and become the top attraction at the Berlin Wintergarten theatre. But lustful passions undo the trust required for this most dangerous work. Cinematographer Karl Freund's "unleashed" camera is the other star of this show, flying through the air alongside the acrobats. DIR/SCR Ewald André Dupont; SCR Leo Birinski, from the book "Der Eid des Stephan Huller" by Felix Holländer; PROD Erich Pommer. Germany, 1925, b&w, 95 min. Silent with English intertitles. NOT RATED
The digital restoration was undertaken by the F. W. Murnau Foundation, working with Filmarchiv Austria and the Library of Congress.
