2015 Oscar® Selection, Guatemala
Seventeen-year-old María is a Kaqchikel Maya, living with her family on a coffee plantation at the foot of an active volcano. Though her parents have plans to marry her off to the plantation’s foreman, María has her sights set on Pepe, a coffee harvester with dreams of heading to the U.S. Her choices carry unexpected consequences. A riveting clash between tradition and modernity plays out in this heartwrenching debut film from Jayro Bustamante, beautifully rendered in bold colors.
