AUGUST WINDS [Ventos de Agosto]
The narrative debut of documentary filmmaker Gabriel Mascaro (HIGH-RISE, 2009 AFI Latin American Film Festival) stunningly explores life and death in a small coastal village in Brazil. Sent to look after her grandmother in the countryside, Shirley supports her family by working at a local plantation, often sneaking away to hook up with her boyfriend Jeison amongst the coconuts. When Jeison finds a skull at sea, followed by a body washing ashore, their youthful vision of paradise begins to fade, and harsh realities come into focus. Special Mention, 2014 Locarno Film Festival; Official Selection, 2014 AFI FEST, London, Chicago Film Festivals.
DIR/SCR Gabriel Mascaro; SCR/PROD Rachel Ellis. Brazil, 2014, color, 77 min, DCP. In Portuguese with English subtitles. NOT RATED
