ÍNDIA (2022)
The feature debut from Portuguese filmmaker Telmo Churro (a collaborator on Miguel Gomes' TABU and ARABIAN NIGHTS trilogy) is an oddball delight, blending deadpan tragicomedy with a journey through Portugal's colonial histories. Tiago (Pedro Inês) is a heartbroken, middle-aged tour guide in Lisbon living with his father (José Manuel Mendes), a nostalgic Navy veteran, and his lust-filled teenaged son (João Carvalho). They play host to Karen (Denise Fraga), a grieving widow from Brazil, in town for a five-day visit. Contemplating love, loss, trauma and ghosts of the past, they trek across Lisbon in fits of existential dread. Shot in 16mm, Churro's revelatory debut places him alongside fellow New Portuguese Cinema luminaries Gomes and João Pedro Rodrigues, all playfully dissecting their nation's troubled history and present. Official Selection, 2022 São Paolo Film Festival; 2023 BAFICI, IndieLisboa and FICUNAM film festivals. DIR/SCR Telmo Churro; SCR Mariana Ricardo; PROD Sandro Aguilar, Luís Urbano. Portugal, 2022, color, 123 min. In Portuguese with English subtitles. NOT RATED
