Downtrodden housewife Irene (Maeve Jinkings, AQUARIUS, NEON BULL) lives with her deadbeat husband, precocious young son and ailing father on a charcoal farm in rural Brazil. Struggling to get by, she's thrown a lifeline when a nurse offers her a pile of cash to off her father and hide an Argentine drug lord in his place (César Bordón, WILD TALES). A fish-out-of-water comedy ensues as the family adjusts to their new houseguest, a catalyst that breaks Irene out of her shell. But nosy neighbors and a restless gangster threaten to upend their newfound stability. In this darkly comic class satire wrapped in a crime thriller, filmmaker Carolina Markowicz deftly juggles genres as she slowly ratchets up the tension until an electrifying finale changes everything. Official Selection, 2022 Toronto and San Sebastián film festivals. DIR/SCR Carolina Markowicz; PROD Zita Carvalhosa. Brazil/Argentina, 2022, color, 107 min. In Portuguese and Spanish with English subtitles. NOT RATED
