UP IN MABEL'S ROOM (1926)

Introduction by fashion historian Michelle Tolini Finamore. Live musical accompaniment by Makia Matsumura. Happy hour starting at 6:00 p.m. (cash bar with cocktail specials)

Wealthy Garry Ainsworth (silent film star Harrison Ford) has recently married strait-laced Alicia (Sylvia Breamer), a major change from his previous wife, the high-living, pleasure-seeking Mabel (Marie Prevost), whom he divorced after a misadventure in Paris. But then Mabel turns up, resolved to win back her former husband, and she's not above flaunting a certain intimate item her then-husband gave her, both to re-entice him and to infuriate the jealous Alicia: a silken camisole embroidered with both her and Garry's names. The lingerie is so shocking that Garry's loyal valet Hawkins (William Orlamond) can barely utter its name, resorting to "A doo-dad! A feminine doo-dad! An article of intimate apparel!" and other entertaining euphemisms. An uproarious farce ensues, as the scandalous chemise changes hands, chases ensue and comic mistakes multiply. Prevost shines as the insouciant free spirit Mabel, ably supported by her leading man Ford, Phyllis Haver as her gal pal Sylvia and the scene-stealing Orlamond as the stammering Hawkins. DIR E. Mason Hopper; SCR F. McGrew Willis, from the play by Wilson Collison and Otto Harbach; PROD Al Christie. U.S., 1926, b&w, 70 min. Silent with English intertitles. NOT RATED
